The Series 65 Ionization Smoke Detector uses a low activity radioactive foil to detect fires by irradiating the air in the smoke chamber and causing a current flow. If smoke enters the chamber, the current flow is reduced leading to an alarm.
Circuitry in the Integrating Ionization Smoke Detector protects against transient levels of smoke above the normal threshold level for 10 to 20 seconds. The sensitivity of the detector is not affected by this modification.
