A: Possibly, or it could have reached the end of its life. Put new batteries in and if it continues to beep then replace it.

Q: I've had my detector for 21 years. It's now starting to beep all the time. What is the usual lifetime for this item? Do I need to get a new one? Thanks.

A: You have been extremely lucky if you had a CO detector for 21 years and it is only now beeping... They generally only last 5 - 7 years... I would suggest replacing it immediately, chances are it hasn't worked in years.

Q: I have battery operated carbon monoxide detector with First Alert logo. I cannot figure out how you open it and check battery, Does it slide apart? have a release point?? pop off?

A: without a part number to go by, I would only be guessing. Find out the part number and search for it on our site, if you find it go to the Blue Documents Tab for the Data Sheet and look at Page 2, the Battery info is usually there.

Q: put in new aa batteries three times yet after two weeks or less the 5 beeps go off. what are we doing wrong? why doesn't first alert alarm work for longer than two weeks?

A: How old are these units? These are Carbon Monoxide Detectors with a lifespan of 4 - 6 years, could be that they have reached the end of their life and they are telling you it is time to replace them.

Q: My alarm went off (3 chirps), then stopped. I changed the batteries and it is now flashing intermittently but no sound. I put my other detector on the second floor (also a First Alert detector), and it is fine. Does this chirp when it is time to change batteries?

A: The chirp can mean it has a low battery or that the detector is coming to the end of its life. CO Detectors have a 4 - 7 year life span and when the sensor gets too old the detector will chirp.

Q: What does it mean when the red light flashes?

A: The red light flashes every minute, indicating the alarm is receiving battery power (horn is silent)

Q: I have this carbon monoxide detector. I have 2 new AA batteries in it. I plugged it in the wall also. It started chirping every few seconds. I unplugged it and took the batteries out. It had stopped chirping. I plugged it in the wall without the batteries and now it is chirping again. What is your suggestion?

A: How old is the detector, these units have around a 4 year life and then they chirp to let you know it is time to replace it. It sounds just like a low battery chirp. If it is around 4 years old and still chirps after new batteries are installed, I would say that it is time to swap it out.
